Domain hosting can be as simple as email hosting for your domain name through to application and database hosting, please see our hosting services for more information.What is a domain ?
Domain names are often confused with subdomain names, the difference is important, look at the web address in your brower right now , it hopeully says something like
http://www.centurioncomputers.com.au/resources/domains.php
breaking that down into its components we get
- ‘http://‘ which is the protocol we are using to view this webpage
- ‘www‘ is the subdomain
- ‘centurioncomputers.com.au‘ is the actual domain
- ‘/resources/domains.php‘ is the path to this webpage on the www.centurioncomputers.com.au subdomain.
So for the purposes of registering a domain for email and webpage use the important bit is the domain not the subdomain or protocol.
‘www‘ confuses many , it is the standard subdomain used for web pages , but you will often see websites e.g
fred.mydomain.com or mail.mydomain.com
these are all subdomains of the mydomian.com domain !
What would I do with a domain?
If you are asking that question then you probably do not need a domain name, however most business and organisations require a domain name to give them a permanent point of prescence on the internet, ISP‘s often give away free web & email hosting as part of their contracts but this ties you down to that provider, fred@bigpond.com is great until you switch to westnet & then you have lost your email address.
Having you own domain name lets you keep your email and web address no matter whcih host or ISP you choose.
