 What is wireless ?

Wireless computing is not the same as wireless broadband. Wireless computing becomes useful when you have more than 1 computer/laptop and want to share files or an internet connection between them. With wireless you do not need to physically connect the computers together, all communication is.. well, wireless

 Why Wireless

Oh dear , why not ? if you like cables and clutter then please feel free , if you like tidy and you have more than one computer connected to (or you would like connected to) the internet or each other then wireless networking is your friend , nor is it as scary as it may at first sound.

You have convinced me already ..what do I need ?

OK , there are many ways to skin the wireless cat* , the easiest though is with a wireless router and a couple of wireless adapters.

A wireless router can connect to your ADSL modem or your computer (or both) this provides a central point for your wireless adapters (connected to your computers) to connect to. Note that you can also get Wireless ADSL modems (even less clutter !!).

Now to connect your computers to the wireless router (which then provides file and internet sharing) you need to have a wireless adapter for each computer ... OK if a computer is sitting right next to the wireless router you can simply attach it with a standard network cable , most routers provide at least 1 , often 4 standard network ports as well as the wireless capabilities)

Wireless adapters come in 3 main guises , as a PCI card (physically installed into your computer) ,  an external USB adapter (plugs into a spare/free USB port) or for laptops as a PCMCIA card (though most modern laptops have built in wireless devices)

External Adapters themselves are sometimes actually wireless access points and sometimes offer connection to the computer via an ethernet cable, however for all intents and purposes they are still a wireless adapter)

Wireless adapters come with software that provides an easy interface to help connect to your access point (the router)

Wireless bridges are used when your computer is too far away from your router , they `bridge` the connection between the adapter and the router.

You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat.
Albert Einstein, when asked to describe radio
